Karl E. Hiestand

October 23, 1933 ~ April 15, 2016 (age 82) 82 Years Old

            Muncie-Karl E. Hiestand, 82, passed away early Friday morning, April 15, 2016, at the Bethel

Point Health and Rehabilitation Care Center following a brief illness.  He was born on October 23, 1933, in

Gaston, the son of Harry Homer and Grace (Cooper) Hiestand.

            Mr. Hiestand graduated from Gaston High School in the class of 1951 and later was employed at the Paul Abel Buick dealership in Muncie.  He eventually went to work for Chevrolet in Muncie and retired in 1993 after 40 years of service as a Journeyman Master Machine mechanic.  Karl joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and became a 2nd Class Aviation Machinist and later was honorably discharged in 1956.  In the late 50’s and 60’s he raced cars and usually drove roadsters.  Mr. Hiestand drove a Sprint car at the Little 500 in Anderson and finished in 10th place in 1960.  He was an avid fisherman, gardener and loved working with just about anything mechanical.  On December 22, 1984, Karl married the love of his life, Joyce (Kowalski) Hiestand and she preceded him in death September 21, 2015.

            He is survived by four daughters, Luann Barrett, Muncie, Rhonda Scarberry, Farmland, Tammy Vonesh (husband-Tony), Roanoke and Barbara “Barbie” Beckham (husband-Kim), Franklin Kentucky; one son, chad Kowalski, Kokomo; eight grandchildren, Lora, Jamie, Jade, Jessica, Tim, Danielle, Doug and Nick; eleven great grandchildren.

            Besides his wife of 31 years Joyce, he is preceded in death by a son, Karl E. Hiestand, Jr. in 1971; a grandson, Jeremy Cassity on March 17, 1983; his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Clem Hiestand; one sister, Georgia Rogers and his best friend, Eugene Christie.

            Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, 200 P.M. at the Parson Mortuary with Pastor John Burton officiating.  Burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery.  Military honors will be rendered by the Delaware County Honor Guard.

            Friends may call at the Parson Mortuary on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, from 12:00 P.M. until service time.
