Norma Rittmeyer Obituary

Norma June Rittmeyer

June 19, 1923 – April 30, 2018

“June” Rittmeyer, 94, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully in assisted living in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Born Norma June Marquette in Columbus, OH, June was the only child of Edgar Adam and Susan Fannie Marquette. As a young child, her family moved to Portsmouth, OH, where June attended school and graduated from Portsmouth High School. She attended Deaconess Nursing School in Cincinnati, OH, where she received her RN and met her soon-to-be fiancé, John Louis “Jack” Rittmeyer. When Jack entered the Army as a physician during World War II, June joined the Army Nurse Corps. While Jack went overseas June served in the United States helping returning service men in their recovery.

After serving our country, June and Jack married and moved to Baltimore, MD, where Jack finished his final residency. During that time, their first of three daughters, Linda, was born in 1948. Soon their young family moved to Philippi, WV, where Jack began practicing medicine and June became a stay-at-home mother. Here their other two daughters were born, Ellen in 1953 and Karen in 1959. June and Jack were an important part of the Phillippi community for 18 years, when they moved to Muncie, IN in 1965. In Muncie, June relaunched her nursing career working at Ball State University Health Center.  She lost Jack to cancer in 1983 and never remarried.

Over the years, June enjoyed bowling in several leagues in Muncie, and travelled the country competing in tournaments with her bowling team. During several of her tournaments in Nevada, she developed a passion for her other favorite past time – gambling!  She almost always came home a winner. As the years passed, the bowling tournaments ceased, but her love of casinos and scratch-offs continued! She once won $77,000 on a scratch off!

June is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Richard) Sutphin, Ellen (Michael) Hinga, and Karen (Seth) Pruden; grandchildren Zachary (Jordana Bernard) Sutphin, Andrew (Linette Whitney) Sutphin, Katie (Jeff) Lory, Lisa (Ronnie) Mahlerwein, Liz (Myles) Ogea, Abby Hinga, Megan (Ben) Lantz, Adam Pruden, Ben Pruden, Mike Pruden, and Sarah (Trevor) Kimm and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for family only will be held at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie, Indiana. Memorial donations may be made in June’s honor to The American Cancer Society, or ARF.
