Eugene Victor Vermeulen, 95, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life filled with hard work, family, friendship, and simple pleasures.

Eugene was born in Essex Township, Ontario, Canada. During his youth, he worked alongside his father and older brother as a tobacco farmer. His early years on the farm instilled in him a lifelong love of gardening, hard work, and the satisfaction of growing and sharing food.

Eugene met his first wife, Mariette, in Ontario, and together they had two children. In 1959, they emigrated to Indiana, where Eugene built a new life for his family. He proudly became a United States citizen in 1965.

A skilled and hardworking man, Eugene trained as a welder and worked for numerous companies in Muncie and throughout central Indiana. Over the years, his work included building gyrocopters, vending machines, large transformers, and steel bridge components at Indiana Bridge. He retired after many years of dedicated work.

Eugene loved woodworking, auto repair, and gardening. His experiences as a young farmer stayed with him throughout his life, and he took great pride in his garden. He especially enjoyed sharing the bounty from his garden and his knowledge with family and friends.

In Muncie, Eugene met his second wife, Kathryn. Together, they had two children and created a loving family.

Eugene is survived by his children, Lois Green (Bob), Vincent Vermeulen, Elizabeth Vermeulen (Gary Edwards), Rebecca, Jennifer Orchard (Paul), Maggie Wright (John); his sisters, Joan Bradt and Sylvia Claxton (Sam); as well as many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his numerous and much-loved grandpets.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, and his first wife, Mariette.

Eugene especially enjoyed polka music, black coffee, cookies, pie, and ice cream. In keeping with his love of life's simple pleasures, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, loved ones take a Sunday drive and treat themselves to some ice cream. Those who wish to make a contribution in Eugene's memory may instead donate to Muncie A.R.F (Animal Rescue Fund) or Action for Animals.

The family would love to thank all the Brick Yard Healthcare staff for all their continuous care and support during dad's time there and a special thank you to his devoted caregiver Jenny Fyffe.

Funeral services will be held at Parson Mortuary on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
