Floyd Clinton Bird, 86, finished his earthly journey on 8/20, surrounded by his loving family, in peace. He high-fived Saint Peter at the Pearly Gate and now resides in Heaven as a Saint eternal.
Floyd was a proud life-long resident of Muncie and Delaware County, born and raised by his loving parents Clyde and Mary Jane (Harless) Bird. He graduated from Royerton High School, a 3-sport star and All-State football player for the Redbirds. He received a full-ride football scholarship to Miami of Ohio, which he promptly rejected to make the best decision of his life to instead marry the love of his life, his beautiful wife, Freda (Brower) Bird. They had just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on July 1st. Floyd and Freda raised 3 children: Jeff (Sue), Kim (Kim), and Joe (Kris). He loved his family unconditionally and with great passion and supported them unfailingly through their academic and sports lives. He was also blessed with 9 grandchildren, Samantha, Katy, Clint, Joe, Emmy, Taylor, Ryan, Austin, and Lexi, and 5 great-grandchildren, Cam, Dax, Winnie, Milo, and Penelope. His family was his pride and joy, and he expressed it with deep and abiding love.
Floyd was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, nurturing his faith in God and passing that along to his family, and he served the church in numerous leadership roles.
He worked his entire career at Warner Gear, both in the factory as a proud Local 287 man and later in management as a purchaser. After retiring, he and Freda bought a place in Desert Hot Springs, California, where they spent winters for 12 years, often visited by the granddaughters for marathon tanning sessions. He restored a classic 1955 T-Bird, which was a source of pride. He loved to take a quick trip to Vegas to play the penny slots, going to the horse track on his birthday, having a tamale and margarita at Puerta, and fishing off the back of his pontoon on Prairie Creek, a cold Corona in his hand. He was the world's greatest fan of the Cleveland Indians. He took great pride in his role as the field announcer for the Muncie Central Bearcat football and baseball teams for over 2 decades. He also loved debating his Native American ancestry (purported, never confirmed).
Floyd, above all, was a family man; he loved Freda with all his heart, as well as his kids and grandkids as well and his extended family of many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Floyd will be missed by all whose lives he touched, but now rests in eternal peace, his final calling.
A small private celebration of life will occur to acknowledge a life lived to its fullest. Our family is grateful to Westminster Village and IU Health Hospice for all their support. Donations in Floyd’s honor and memory can be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Foundation.
