Jacqueline (Jackie) Marie Hartley, 85, died Sunday, November 19, 2023, at The Woodlands after a long illness.
She was born in Muncie, the daughter of Jack and Velma Clore. Other than a brief time living in New Jersey as a youth, she was a lifelong Muncie resident. She attended Garfield Elementary and McKinley Junior High Schools and graduated from Muncie Central High School. After graduation, she attended Muncie Business School and spent most of her career in various office positions, including working for Marhoefer Packing Co., Indiana Bell, Sears Roebuck & Co., Smith Jewelers, and the U.S. Postal Service. She spent the last part of her career as a voter registration clerk in the Delaware County Voter Registration office, retiring after more than 10 years in that role.
She was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church from her youth and held several positions in the congregation, including deaconess, Sunday school teacher, youth worker, and women’s group member. She also was church secretary for many years. In addition to her church work, she was active in the Delaware County Democratic Party, the party’s Rooster Booster group, and worked within the central committee organization. She also participated in numerous local political campaigns, including those of her husband, Robert (Bob) Hartley, when he ran for and won, Delaware County Council and Delaware County Commissioner seats.
She is survived by two sons, Donald (wife: Cathy) Hartley, and Gregory (wife: Vicki) Maynard; five grandchildren, Donald Hartley Jr., Michelle (husband: Steve) Stone, Michael Maynard, Hannah (husband: Zach) Beechboard, and Phillip Maynard; six great-grandchildren, Lacey Winkle, Cody Hartley, Colton Hartley, Christopher Wilson, Olivia Beechboard, and Abram Beechboard; several great-great-grandchildren, and two close sisters-in-law, Janet (husband: Vernon) Reffitt and Bonita (husband: Arvel Jr.) Posey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, to whom she was married more than 50 years before his 2014 death; a daughter, Brenda West; two sisters, Jeanie Justice, and Joey Young, and three sisters-in-law, Ruby (Sis) Nichols, Pat Lehman, and Wanda (Suzy) Bean.
Services and burial will be on Monday at Beech Grove Cemetery. Calling will begin at 9 a.m. in the cemetery chapel; a brief service will begin at 10 a.m., with Allie Craycraft Jr., officiating.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorials be directed in Jackie’s memory to Foursquare South Gospel Church, 3101 S. Walnut St., Muncie, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
