James Lee Sherfy Obituary

James L. Sherfy, 89, of Muncie, IN, went to heaven on November 15, 2025.  He was born in Muncie on February 4, 1936, to James Burie and Willie B. (Oliver) Sherfy.


James attended Muncie Central High School, where he shared his love of music, being both a drum major and an avid band member. After high school, he proudly served in the Navy from 1956-1961. After his military service, James pursued his passion for bowling, becoming a pro shop technician and managing the Candlelight Bowling Lanes, where he met the love of his life, Daisy Catherine (Warford).


In July 1962, James and Daisy married and managed Tower Lanes Bowling Alley in Muncie, IN, and Tiger Lanes in Hagerstown, IN. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two daughters: Nancy Jo, born in 1963, and Catherine Lee, born in 1965.


Along his journey, James also worked as a farmer; he greatly enjoyed and held various other jobs over the years, including owning and operating Jim Sherfy's Pro Shop. He loved both singing and conducting the many church choirs. He cherished time spent with family and friends and touched many lives with his kindness and gentle spirit.


James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Daisy Catherine (Warford) Sherfy, his parents, James B. Sherfy and Willie B. Gullett, his brother Delray Sherfy, brother-in-law Stephan Warford, and granddaughter Kylie Jean Cooksey, as well as his mother and father-in-law, nieces, and nephews.


He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Jo (Rex) Cooksey of Muncie, IN, and Catherine Lee


(Wayne Brookes) Cooper of Columbus, IN, grandchildren Kimberley (Tyler) Wright of Louisville, Kentucky; Cory (Jasmine) Cooper of Columbus, In; Christopher Cooper of Indianapolis, IN; Vanessa Brookes of Indianapolis, IN; Jackson Brookes of West Point, NY; and greatgrandchildren Branson and Bryant Dalton of Muncie, In; Gabriella Cooksey of Muncie, In; and Derek Cooper of Columbus, ln.


He is also survived by his brothers Gene (Janie) Sherfy of Muncie, IN; Jack Sherfy of San Diego, CA; Frank (Linda) Sherfy of Oracle, AZ; and sisters-in-law Nancy Dutton of Port Charlotte, FL; Ollie Jo Smith of Muncie, IN.


James was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.


A Celebration of Life will be held on December 6, 2025, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at 115 W. Weber Dr., Muncie, IN. 47303
