Janet Louise (Ebrite) Claspell Obituary
Janet Louise Ebrite Claspell, age 86, passed away on December 28, 2025 in Renton, Washington.
She was born on March 16, 1939, in Muncie, Indiana, and grew up on farms in Delaware County. Jan attended Royerton School all 12 years, where she was active in 4-H for eight years. She briefly attended Purdue University before marrying Ogal B. Claspell. Their marriage began a life of travel and service as an Air Force family. They lived in Zaragoza, Spain; Gulfport, Mississippi; Tempe, Arizona; Dayton, Ohio; Omaha, Nebraska; and the Washington, D.C. area, before returning to Muncie in 2003. Along the way, they raised five children.
She operated her own drapery business for a time and, in retirement, enjoyed serving with Ogal in the Washington, D.C., and Columbus LDS temples.
Jan was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the years, she held many church callings, including Relief Society President, Primary President, Sunday School teacher, and Young Women leader. She was especially passionate about girls’ camp, serving for more than a decade as camp director in multiple states and regions.
Jan was enthusiastic about genealogy. Initially, it involved interviewing family, writing letters, collecting papers, and searching through microfiche. In her final active years, she enjoyed volunteering at the Family History Center.
Jan also enjoyed gardening, camping, and sewing. While she battled depression for much of her life, her deep appreciation for service, hard work, and faith was always present. Even as dementia gradually changed her memory, her friendliness, affection, and gratitude to others remained.
She is survived by her children and their spouses Ogal, Jr. (Dana); Neal (Josie), Sheryl Hartman (Dale), Gail, Janel Bitgood (Mike), her grandchildren Devan (Temah), Jordan (Natalie), Lauren Willis (Loren), Miles (Linette), Leah Gannaway (Lee), Andrew (Jacqueline), Cameo Howe (Ian), Jamie Hartman (Steven), Glenn Hartman (Eric), Mark Hartman, Rachel Thomas (Kyle), Ally Bitgood (Mitch), and Josh Bitgood; and her great-grandchildren Levi, Jarrett, Asher, Thaddeus, Gideon, Wilola, Magnolia, Lee, Dana Joan, Leo, Maya, Gabriella, Artorious, Jackson, Mason, Christopher, Alice, Burdett, and Felix. She is predeceased by her husband, Ogal, Sr., her father Charles R. Ebrite, her mother Carol L. Ebrite, her brother Donald Ebrite, and her sister, R. Sue Provost.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4800 W. Robinwood Drive, Muncie, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Friends may call on the family at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.
