Mariette Pauline (DeWitte) Young Obituary

Mariette P. (DeWitte) Young passed away on December 17, 2025

Born in Belgium in 1934, Mariette and her family struggled through and survived the hardships of WWII, and then immigrated to Canada when she was 14 years old.

There she learned English, apprenticed, and received her hairdresser's license. She and her only sibling, Augusta, learned English, got married, and had daughters. Five years later, Mariette, her husband, and their daughter (legally) immigrated to the USA, and shortly thereafter, she gave birth to their son. They became citizens in 1965.

Mariette was a homemaker, hairdresser, and antiques appraiser. She was often seen at thrift stores such as the Bargain Box for over 50 years. She also attended local auctions, many times outbidding other accomplished dealers.

Mariette’s hidden talent that some were not aware of was that she was an accomplished knitter, having made dozens of sweaters, scarves, and hats for family and friends. Mariette excelled at designing her own knitted & crocheted patterns, of which several were published.

The highlight of her knitting career was the creation of a beautiful afghan for the King and Queen of Belgium. After meeting the King and Queen, Mariette was informed that the afghan was kept by them and they requested a second to be placed in the King's Museum in appreciation of her devotion and creativity.

Mariette was a devout Christian and never hesitated to tell others about the love of God, and often witnessed to strangers, and some became good friends. She lived her faith and was a kind and generous person.

She leaves behind her son Vincent and daughter Lois (Bob) Muncie, nieces Susanne King (Peter) TN, Denise Coulter (son Nikklas) Canada, and many relatives in Canada, the United States, and Belgium.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends, and we look forward to seeing her again in heaven.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Mariette’s love of cats and dogs by considering a donation to Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) in Muncie.

A short funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Parson Mortuary in Muncie, IN. A Celebration of Life will be held following the burial, at St. Francis of Assisi at 1200 W. Riverside Avenue from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
