Mary Laverne (Phillips) Lowe-Eley Obituary

On the evening of December 14, Mary Lowe-Eley passed away at Muncie Estates.

Born to H. D. and Pauline (King) Phillips and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Mary spent her summers in Perry, Georgia where her parents were from. Georgia was where she met her first husband, John, while he was in military training. After his service overseas during World War II they relocated to Muncie, Indiana, where they raised their family.

In the early years of Muncie, Mary worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Company, was a member of Beta Sigma Phi social sorority, and was active in Civic Theatre both on stage and back stage, acting and producing many plays during the 1960s and serving on the board of directors during the move and renovation of the old Hoosier (Star) Theatre.

In 1964 she began working in the City Clerk’s Office before moving on to become a legal secretary for several attorneys (most notably John V. Hampton) until 1983 when she became the Court Secretary for Judge Robert E. Robinson, Superior Court 4. She retired in 1995.

Seven years after the death of her first husband she married Wesley Eley and they enjoyed their retirement years traveling in their motorhome.

Mary was preceded in death by John E. Lowe, her husband of 40 years; Wesley B. Eley, her husband of 23 years; and her son John P. Lowe.

Left to cherish her memory, daughter and son-in-law, Leigh and Corby Sheffield; her grandchildren Kelly Sheffield (Cathy), Shaun Sheffield (Maricruz), Cameron Artis (Brandon), and seven great-grandchildren.

As per her wishes, cremation was chosen and there will be no public services. Arrangements were entrusted to Parson Mortuary.
