Sandra “Sandy” Kay Burke peacefully left this Earth to be with the Lord on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Born on February 21, 1958, in Muncie, IN, Sandy was the beloved daughter of Fred M. and June E. (Davis Spence. She graduated from Southside High School in 1976 and married Michael Lee Burke on September 18, 1993. They shared nearly 23 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2016.
Sandy dedicated many years to Liberty-Perry Schools, where she began as an aide in the special needs classroom, later working in the life skills classroom at Wapahani High School, and finally in the high school cafeteria. She cherished her coworkers, referring to the “kitchen girls” as family.
Remembered for her kindness and radiant smile, Sandy loved life and cherished her time with friends and family. She especially enjoyed teasing Wesley, Mark, and Matt at lunch, as well as playing bingo and tending to her home. Family was everything to her, and she took great joy in gathering everyone together. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. As a loving mother, Nanny, and Nanna, she was always there to offer support and encouragement, inspiring others to pursue their dreams.
Sandy is survived by her two sons, Chris Buck and Cody Burke; her daughter, Helen (Paul) Leach; grandchildren Zane (Sydney) Thompson, Zoe Overbey, Aubrey Buck, Gabrielle Buck, Eli Leach, and Lilly Leach; great-grandsons Kayden and Kolton Adkins; brothers David (DeeAnn) Spence, Jimmy (Sue Burns) Spence, and Travis Spence; sisters Nancy Spence and Debbie Spence; Mother in law, Alta Burke; sister-in-law Darlene Wolfe; brother-in-law Greg Burke; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends who felt her warmth and generosity.
Sandy was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, and brother-in-law Wolfe.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Brian Lumpkin and his staff for their exceptional care over the years, and to the ER staff at Ball Hospital for their compassion and care. Special thanks to Brenda Layne , Mark Fahey, Stephanie Dickinson, and the staff at Wapahani High School and Selma Middle School cafeterias for their unwavering support and friendship.
