Walter E. “Gene” McCallister, 85, passed away peacefully May 4, 2020 surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He was born January 16, 1935 in Albany, Indiana to Frank and Margaret (Hart) McCallister. Gene attended Eaton Schools before joining the Army to serve his country, he ran his own gas stations for 25 years before stepping down to work as a welder for Indiana Bridge for another 25 years. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Alexandria and a member of The Jar Community Church of Muncie. In his younger years, he enjoyed taking his family boating and skiing, but most of all, Gene loved detailing cars, his family cook-outs and spending time with his loved ones.
Gene is survived by his son, Howard (Mycki) McCallister; Daughters, Cindy (Ronnie) Smith, Mindy (Mickey) Swain and Natalie (Todd) Stebleton; Sisters, Wanda Kane, Nancy (Robert) Hoffman and Joyce Painter; Eight grandchildren; Ten great-grandchildren; Many nieces and nephews; Special niece, Kathy (Joe) Smith; Special friends, Kaye White and Candace Upchurch, and his beloved Jack Russell terrier, Patty.
He is preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Mildred McCallister; mother and father; Brother, Marvin “Bud” McCallister; Sister, Dorothy Ratcliff; and grandson, Tony Galbraith.
There will be services for Gene, Wednesday, May 13 at 1 p.m. at Parson Mortuary with visitation taking place from 12 p.m. to 1. Pastor Chris Bunch will officiate. Online condolences may be shared at www.parsonmortuary.com
