Wathena Reagor Mayfield passed peacefully in her sleep on January 4, 2021 at the age of 97. Born March 6, 1923 into a sharecropping family in the Bootheel of Missouri. She was proceeded in death by four sisters, a brother and often referred to herself as the “last leaf on the tree”. Growing up during hard times my mother always said that during the depression being a farmer was not all bad. “We had food,” she said, “when so many others did not.” She attended Southeast Missouri State College and eventually earned a Master’s degree from Ball State University. She taught for 23 wonderful years at Forest Park Elementary School. She was married for 54 years to Dr. P. Miller Mayfield with whom she shared her life and traveled the world. Wathena leaves two sons, Mike and Dan Mayfield, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a master quilter and even after she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration, she would still work with other quilters helping where she could. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Muncie since 1955 and an activist for women’s rights. Her family plans to return her remains to her home in Missouri.
