Robert Stephenson Obituary

Robert E. Stephenson died at his home Thursday May 10, 2018, with his wife at his side.

Born September 21, 1932, he was adopted by William E. and Elva (Upchurch) Stephenson and lived his entire life in or around the Muncie area.

His mother, Elva died in 1944 and his dad William in 1949. At that time, he went to live at the YMCA, and graduated Muncie Central High School in 1950.

Robert loved the game of baseball and worked for the Cincinnati Red’s Farm Team while in school. Upon graduation he went to Tampa, Florida, hoping to become a part of the team, but had to return to Muncie because of the Draft. He was denied entrance to the service because of hearing loss, so began his career in the printing business. He continued to play baseball with several local leagues and began golfing when he joined the Green Hills Country Club.

He was the Administrative Assistant to Mayor John Hampton from 1964-1967, and also served as president of the Parks Board. In the early 1980’s he served as President of he Delaware County Alcoholic Beverages Board before becoming outside bailiff for Delaware County Superior Court 4. Robert was appointed Republican member of the Muncie Sanitary District in 1985 and served as President for almost 8 years.

He and his wife Janice co-owned and operated The American Press, The News Republican, a weekly newspaper in New Castle, Indiana, and Old American Log Homes where they sold and constructed square log homes. During this time, he also bought, remodeled and sold several properties. He was a part of several city and county administrations. His last job was the completion of the Royerton Sewer Project.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janice and her two daughters, Sabrina Sharp and Natalie Sharp; His daughter, Sheri Hileman of Fort Myers, Florida; and his first wife Bonnie McCloud, mother of his two children. He is also survived by sister-in-law; Joyce Hudson of Hohenwald, Tennessee; Grandchildren; David (Jennifer) Stephenson and son Kyle of Scottsburg, Indiana, Angie Scott and her two daughters Brinley and Kaylin of Muncie, Indiana, Adam (Bre) Stephenson and their two daughters, Addison and Baylee of Greenwood, Indiana, Lora and Joe Engleman, daughter Mona, of Dubois, Wyoming, and Lauren Cartmel, daughters Jessica and Natalie of Westfield, Indiana, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, his wife’s daughter, Mona Lisa Hussion of Casper, Wyoming and his only son Randy of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Calling will be at Parson Mortuary, 801 West Adams Street, Muncie, Indiana, on Wednesday, May 16 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Funeral service will follow at 1:00pm at the mortuary. Internment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Losantville, Indiana.
