Muncie-Robert E. Smith, 77, passed away late Thursday evening, October 20, 2011, following a extended illness at the Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 31, 1934 in Marion, the son of Horace and Marcella (Corn) Smith.
Robert married the love of his life, Patricia (Caudill) Smith on, August 17, 1956, in Grant County, Indiana. Mr. Smith had worked in the maintenance dept. of Jefferson-Smurfit Corporation for 35yrs., retiring in 1996. He then became part of the grounds maintenance crew at Elm Ridge Cemetery for 5yrs. Robert was a member of the UFCW Union Local #700, enjoyed playing bingo, riding motorcycles, NASCAR and sports. More specifically, he followed women’s basketball and softball.
Besides his wife of 55yrs, Patricia, he is survived by three sons, Robert Smith (wife-Karen), Hartford City, Randy Smith (wife-Robin), Farmland and Richard Smith, Dunkirk; two grandsons, John Smith, North Carolina and Jacob Smith, Hartford City; four granddaughters, Jessica Blake (husband-Brad), Belinda Smith, both of Muncie, Amy Smith, Anderson and Natasha Rhodus (husband-Travis), Parker City; two step granddaughters, Melisa and Katie; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Francis Ellis, Anderson and Mary Keihn, Muncie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Eldora Gay Smith in 1982; two sisters, Ion Davis and Jenny Pitcock.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011, 1:00 P.M. at the Parson Mortuary with Pastor Rusty Clements officiating. Burial will follow in the Elm Ridge Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Parson Mortuary on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. and again on Monday from 12:00 P.M. until service time.
